Preface
In 1974, I went on my first diet at the age of 14. I weighed 123 pounds. I lost 10
pounds and quickly gained back 20. I spent the next 25 years wondering what I
was doing wrong.
In 1985, I worked at NutriSystem and saw the ugly truths behind the diet
industry, yet I still kept dieting...
In 2000, I hit a wall. I just couldn't diet anymore.
And in that desperation came a realization. Even when I momentarily hovered at
my goal weight, I wasn't thin. I was a dieter: a stressed-out, scared-of-the-buffet
dieter.
I vowed to stop dieting. Instead, I wanted to be like the thin girl I saw drinking a
real Coke, ordering a hamburger and leaving half of it behind...
How did she do that?
So, I looked around for a naturally thin person that I could "copy." Did I even
know anyone who was sane around food, didn't diet, and was slim? Thankfully, I
did, my grandmother.
Sadly, she was already gone when I recognized her wisdom. But I remember her
eating lamb chops with a baked potato loaded with butter while her three
daughters ate salad and talked about diets. I had enough memories of moments
like that to begin my own journey back to a Healthy Thin Mentality.
In 2012, I wrote my first book, Diets Are Fattening, to share what I had learned.
In 2016, I created a workbook based on the strategies that helped me become a
Healthy Thin Mentality person. It is full of practical advice, great mantras, and
exercises.
